Manufacturers are not required to disclose all the materials used in their mattresses.
Mattresses often contain toxic chemicals like petroleum-based chemicals, foam and plastics.
There is no requirement to disclose the specific type of flame retardant used in mattresses.
The polyurethane foam in many mattresses emits potentially harmful volatile organic compounds, that can cause respiratory irritation, and trigger asthma symptoms.
Solvent-based glue is often used to binds the layers of a mattress.
Mattresses often release fragrance, a mystery blend of chemicals. This added fragrance, can contain phthalates.
PVC or vinyl are used in mattress protectors and in crib mattress covers. Both PVC and Vinyl can contain phthalates.
If you are thinking of changing your current mattress for a healthier option, try mattresses that are made with natural materials like cotton, wool and natural latex that are free from flame retardants and fragrances. Babies sleep more than 14 hours a day and because their bodies are still developing, they’re especially vulnerable to the chemicals in their mattress.
According to Environmental Working Group (EWG) “When buying a new crib or toddler-size mattress, look for the same qualities you would in an adult-size one, including wool or PLA batting, which is derived from plant starch, and waterproof cover that doesn’t contain PVC or vinyl. You also want to stay away from imports, because they could contain flame retardants that have been banned in the U.S. We want you to live a healthy and happy life.
