What is Mold?

Hello again and welcome to another edition of Our Voice by Houston Organic Cleaning Service, where our goal is to help our clients live healthier lives and provide information that will help them reduce their carbon foot print in the process.

  • Mold is a type of fungus that grows and thrives in moist, wet areas. They are a natural part of the environment that can be found almost anywhere moisture and air are present.

  • When mold penetrate porous materials, it makes it somewhat difficult to detect and remove.

  • Molds appears in a wide range of colors, including black, green, blue, or orange.

  • Indoor mold can cause property damage and health problems.

  • Not all mold is not harmful.

  • Some molds are used to make foods like cheese and to manufacture medicines like penicillin.

  • Common indoor molds include: Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium.

  • Mold thrive in moisture, warm, and limited airflow areas.

  • Mold can compromise drywall, rot wood framing, and finds its way into insulation and HVAC systems just to name a few.

  • Mold that penetrated beneath surfaces, often leaves stain after the area is cleaned.

  • Bathrooms, kitchens, areas around leaking pipes, and poor ventilation are hot spots for mold growth.

  • Health effects associated with mold exposure include skin rash, blurred vision, chronic cough, headache and sinus congestion. In addition, mold exposure can trigger asthma, cause depression, anxiety and stress.

  • You can use a simple mixture of vinegar and water to clean affected. Or apply straight vinegar to the affected and leave it for up to 15 minutes and wipe with cloth.

  • For larger infestations, a licensed mold remediation specialist may be necessary.

The best way to control mold growth indoors by controlling humidity with HVAC systems and or dehumidifiers. Additionally, you can use your fans, open windows for ventilation, fix all leaks, drips, avoid using carpets in wet areas such as mud rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.
