What is ozone? Ozone (O3) is a gas molecule composed of three oxygen atoms. Ozone is not a problem up high, however,on ground level it is harmful. The ozone layer found high in the upper atmosphere shields us from much of the sun's ultraviolet radiation. However, ozone air pollution at ground level where we can breathe it in causes serious health problems. The ingredients needed to form ozone are nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and sunlight.

NOx is produced primarily when fossil fuels like gasoline, oil or coal are burned in plants, vehicles and other sources of high-heat combustion. On the other hand, VOCs are released into the air from household chemicals like toxic cleaning products, motor vehicles, chemical plants, refineries, factories, and gas stations. Under the right conditions, when nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and sunlight are present they react to form ozone.

Another way of looking at it, if you are out in the sunlight mowing your lawn, the exhaust from your lawn mower, coupled with gasoline vapors will produce NOx and VOCs which form ozone. According to Harris County Pollution Control you can assist in reducing ozone levels in Harris County by mowing your lawn in the evening when ozone formation is low, use public transportation when possible, and conserve electricity to reduce emissions from power plants.

Also, keep in mind that emissions have been driven down under the federal Clean Air Act. Additionally, vehicles and power plants are said to be cleaner than they used to be.
