Hello again and welcome. Do you really know what is in the cleaning products you use to clean your home? What if I tell you some of the cleaning products you may be using could be affecting your health? According to EWG, “manufacturers can use nearly any substance they want, and they can hide the information about virtually all those ingredients from the eyes of consumers.” Here is a list of some of the deadliest ingredients known to man, that is in the cleaning products you may be using to clean your home. Let us begin with:

  • 1,4-Dioxane - is suspected carcinogen found in laundry detergents.

  • Coal Tar Dyes - is a known human carcinogen, found in soaps, laundry detergents, and all-purpose cleaning products. They are synthetic dyes that are used to make product colors look pretty.

  • Quaternary ammonium compounds or “quats” - are a group of chemicals used for a variety of purposes including preservatives, surfactants, antistatic agents, and as active ingredients in disinfectants and sanitizers. These chemicals can be found in products like detergents, stain removers, all-purpose cleaners, toilet cleaner and air fresheners. Other names they use include, Benzalkonium chloride, Benzethonium chloride, Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chlorides (C12-16), Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride Alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (C12-14), Alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chlorides (C12-18), Didecyldimethylammonium chloride and Dioctyldimethylammonium chloride.

  • Chlorine bleach - fumes can chloroform, which have been linked to cancer. Bleach can form other dangerous gases when it comes in contact with vinegar.

  • MEA (monoethanalomine), DEA (diethanolamine), TEA(triethanolamine) - are common emulsifying ingredients found in dish soap, liquid laundry detergents, all-purpose cleaners, oven cleaners, glass cleaners, surface cleaners, and floor cleaners. To emulsify, is to force two immiscible liquids to combine.

  • Formaldehyde - is a known cancer causing agent.

  • Perchloroethylene (“PERC”) - a cancer causing agent, found in spot removers, home dry cleaning products, and upholstery cleaners.

  • Ammonia - is a colorless gas that is found in all-purpose cleaners, window cleaners, stainless-steel cleaners, drain cleaners, toilet cleaners and bathroom cleaners.

  • Antibacterials - the FDA banned triclosan and 18 other anti-bacterial compounds from hand and body soaps in 2016, however, they may still be found in cleaners.

  • 2-Butoxyethanol (also 2-BE, BCEE, or Butyl cellosolve) - found in glass cleaners, laundry stain removers, carpet cleaners, automobile cleaners, windshield wiper fluid, degreasers, oven cleaners, and rust removers…

  • Diethylene glycol monomethyl Ether (also DEGME or methoxydiglycol) - is a solvent used in some degreasers and heavy-duty cleaners that has been banned for use in cleaners in the EU.

  • Fragrance chemicals - This common ingredient known simply as “fragrance” may contain as much as 3,000 different chemical compounds, including phthalates, an endocrine disruptor. The very sad thing is, this “fragrance” can be found in almost every conventional cleaning and beauty products that has a scent.
