What is Carbon monoxide (CO)?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous, tasteless, colorless, odorless and flammable gas that interferes with the delivery of oxygen throughout the body. Many household items including gas generators, gas charcoal grills, gas water heaters, gas stoves, gas space heaters, gas fireplace and leaving your vehicles running in your attached garage are all sources of carbon monoxide inside your home. This gas is lighter than air and can build up inside your home, poisoning its occupants by replacing the oxygen in red blood cells. At high concentrations it can cause unconsciousness and death. Lower concentrations can cause a range of symptoms, including:
headaches.
dizziness.
weakness.
nausea.
confusion.
disorientation.
fatigue in healthy people.
episodes of increased chest pain in people with chronic heart disease.
Protect your family if you have any gas operated items inside your home by installing battery-operated or battery back-up CO detectors near every sleeping area. Additionally, you should consider buying a detector with a sounding alarm and digital readout, that will tell you the highest level of carbon monoxide (CO) concentration in your home. Make sure to replace your detector every 5 years or according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Your other option is to go completely electric.
