What is Hypoallergenic?
Move-In & Move-Out Natural Cleaning Service Near Me
I have often seen the word hypoallergenic on products, and just assumed it was a good thing. By good, I mean, I assumed the ingredients were pure and would not cause any allergic reaction, at the very least, less allergic reactions. I never thought of digging a bit deeper to find out what the word really means until now.
It turns out the term was first used between 1940 and 1953 in an advertising campaign for cosmetics. And, according to FDA, the term “hypoallergenic” means whatever a particular company wants it to mean. These companies are not required to submit substantiation of their hypoallergenic claim to FDA. I am sure, like me, you have seen lots of cleaning products, including laundry detergent that said hypoallergenic.
The thing is, typically, these products that tout hypoallergenic, almost, always have at least one or more potentially allergenic chemicals. In addition, there is no standard from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prove a product is hypoallergenic. So, if you have concerns about allergen, the safest thing to do, is read the label, do not simply rely on the word “hypoallergenic”.
In other word, if you are allergic to fragrance, instead of trusting the word hypoallergenic, look for the word fragrance on the label. After all is said and done, It turns out the word hypoallergenic, in addition to being misleading, it has no real meaning, and dermatologists agrees.
